Exploring Motovun in Istria
Rising 277 meters above sea level, Motovun has beautiful views of the Mirna River Valley. This picturesque area is surrounded by forests and vineyards, famous for producing some of Istria’s best wines and the highly sought-after white and black truffles. Getting to Motovun is an experience in itself. The drive takes you along narrow roads, cutting through olive groves, vineyards, and forested hills. The drive-up offers some of the most beautiful views of the Istrian peninsula.
Once you arrive in the town, you are greeted by a thick medieval stone wall, cobbled streets, and charming squares. Different from other coastal towns of Poreč, Motovun Istria Croatia is much more peaceful and laidback.
The history and architecture of Motovun
Motovun has a rich history that dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. It was originally built during the Venetian rule and today, you can still see traces of Venetian Gothic Architecture throughout its streets. The lion of St. Mark, a symbol of Venice, is still carved above several doorways in Motovun.
One of the town’s most iconic features is its double set of defensive walls. These are considered a rare architectural element in Istria. These massive stone walls, originally built to protect against invasions, now are used as a promenade. It is the perfect place to enjoy panoramic views of the Mirna River Valley, nearby vineyards, and forests. Walking along the walls, you will enjoy some of the best views in inland Istria, especially at sunset.
Right in the heart of Motovun, you will find the Church of St. Stephen. It was constructed in the 17th century and designed by students of the famous architect Andrea Palladio. Nearby, is the 27-meter-high bell tower, that was built in the 13th century. We recommend climbing to the top for amazing views over the Istrian countryside.

The best things to do in the Village of Motovun
Although Motovun is small, it has plenty to see and do. First, walking along Motovun’s ancient city walls is a must. Access to the walls costs around €4 per person, and they are typically open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, depending on the season. Next, head to Motovun’s main square, lined with cafés, shops, and wine stores. Browse handmade souvenirs, such as ceramics, olive oils, and truffle products. While you’re at it, why not enjoy a coffee while admiring the medieval architecture of the square? Also found within the square is the Parish Church of St. Stephen, a beautiful 17th-century baroque church and its bell tower. You can climb the tower for €2 and enjoy incredible panoramic views of the region.
If you are a food and wine lover, Motovun is perfect for you. The area surrounding the town is covered in vineyards producing Teran and Malvasia wines, two of Istria’s most famous varieties. Many wine cellars and shops in town offer tastings, usually paired with local cheeses and truffle spreads. Truffle hunting is a major part of local culture, a custom that is done in the autumn, during peak truffle season.
For a more active expereince, Motovun is along the Parenzana trail, a former narrow-gauge railway that has been turned into a cycling and hiking path, connecting various Istrian towns.
