While planning your next trip, don’t overlook one of Croatia’s most underrated seaside, historic towns. Poreč is more than just a beachside destination in the Adriatic Sea, it offers architectural beauty waiting to be discovered with its cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and little shops. The centre of the old town shows off the cultural heritage of this enchanted Croatian destination. Perfect for couples, groups of friends, or families looking to make some memories, Poreč has so many wonderful things to offer. A fun and lively town that’s not too overcrowded.
Join us as we explore the heart of Poreč’s Old Town. In this post, we will guide you through the old town and uncover where to go, what to do, where to eat, and most importantly, where to stay while visiting Poreč.
When traveling, one of the best things you can do is look for a destination that not only offers you a place to relax and enjoy the summer sun while playing in the sea but also a destination that has cultural significance, amazing restaurants, and nightlife for those looking to have some fun!
Poreč is the perfect place for couples, friends, and families to enjoy as there is something for everyone! One must-see place in the heart of the Poreč’s old town is the UNESCO-recognized Euphrasian Basilica. The Basilica is most known for its marble blocks and mosaics lining the nave. There is an entrance fee of just over 5€ and we suggest pre-purchasing your ticket, especially in high season as lineups can be long and HOT under the summer sun.
Another one of Poreč’s unmissable sights located in the old town is Marafor Square. In ancient times, it was used as a forum for public gatherings. As an important Roman forum at the time, temples are located nearby, which we highly recommend you visit! Nowadays, the square is lined with cafés and bars for you to sit and enjoy.
There’s nothing more that we love to do than walk through the old streets and alleyways of Poreč’s old town. Known for its shops, restaurants, and cafés, why not enjoy a gelato on a terrace and then pop into some stores selling local goodies, such as wine, olive oil, truffles, and brandy? Traditional Istrian pasta is also a great option to take back home. Some recommended specialty shops found in Poreč worth checking out are Agrolaguna and Sole Luna.
As Poreč was an old Roman city, it still in fact has the Roman layout to this day, with two main intersecting streets: Decumanus Maximus (running from east to west), and Cardo Maximus (from north to south).
Apart from the Euphrasian Basilica, Poreč Old Town has many sites that are worth a visit as you walk along the streets. Many of the homes are in an old Venitian style, which has very distinctive façades and windows.
Another highly recommended site is the free-standing Romanesque House. It was built in the 13th century and is surprisingly still well-preserved! The wooden balcony wrapping around the tower of the house gives it a distinctive character.
Finally, a quick boat ride over to the Island of St. Nicholas is worth the trip. The views of Poreč’s old town from the island are totally worth it!
With so many local dishes to try from the Istrian peninsula, Poreč offers some great spots to enjoy some of the most popular. Many traditional Croatian meals are influenced by the proximity to Italy, as well as what the sea and local produce, like truffles, have to offer. Some of the more typical dishes to try are Fuži, a Croatian-style pasta usually topped with shaved truffles; Maneštra Stew, which is made up of vegetables like potato, cabbage, and beans, and finally some sweet treats like Cukerančići.
We suggest heading out to Konoba Aba, a family-friendly restaurant offering traditional Istrian dishes in a traditional and rustic setting. Casa Manzolin for some fresh seafood, offers a more upscale vibe. Enjoy your shellfish and wine on their romantic terrace. And finally, if you are craving a more Italian-influenced meal, try Spaghetteria L’insolito, known for some of the best pasta in town!
After spending a day out in the sun, the old town of Poreč comes alive, especially in the summer months. Local bars and nightclubs open their doors for some unforgettable nightlife.
The waterfront is a great place to start with a cocktail, we suggest Epoca Café, where you can sip your drink and watch the sunset. Afterwards, why not head into the old town and have a bite to eat before dancing the night away? Byblos is known as one of the best nightclubs in Poreč, playing a mix of international music. There is an entrance fee of 13€ and drinks range from 4€ for a beer to 8€ for cocktails. For those looking for a more relaxed atmosphere, Old Time Bar is a great option. Service is always top-notch and live music is played throughout the evening.
During the low season, in the winter months, you can still enjoy a night out at many of the clubs, however, the beachfront bars are strictly seasonal.
