Kula Turnina: Rovinj’s Hilltop Ruin

Table of Contents

Kula Turnina is a medieval tower set on a plateau a few kilometres northeast of the town, and it is one of the most beautiful spots in the area that almost nobody queues for. Entry is free, the climb is short, and the view stretches from the Rovinj archipelago across to the Brijuni islands.

What is Kula Turnina?

Kula Turnina sits on top of Turnina hill, around 4 kilometres northeast of Rovinj, on a plateau about 105 metres above sea level.

It is not a polished, ticketed attraction, but rather a real ruin. Kula Turnina is the only residential tower on the entire Istrian peninsula, and well-preserved medieval fortifications of this age are uncommon across Europe.

In our opinion, it is the perfect day trip, spent wandering the old town on the coast. But Turnina has a different mood entirely from other Istiran villages. It is quiet, open, and great for exploring at your own pace.

The history and significance of Kula Turnina

The hill itself was occupied long before the tower, as the site sits on the remains of a prehistoric hillfort, known locally as a gradina.

The tower’s first construction phase dates to the 9th century, or the 10th century at the latest.

Since the original structure had suffered visible damage by the 12th century, it was rebuilt and expanded. During this period, it evolved from a simple watchpoint into a fortified residence.

They chose the location strategically; from the summit, defenders could oversee every land route leading to the town as well as the shipping lanes along the western coast of Istria.

Ownership changed hands over the centuries. During the 14th century, the noble Castropola family of Pula controlled the tower. After that, it passed to the Rovinj commune. By the end of the 15th century, residents abandoned the entire complex, and it never returned to active use.

Later, during the Second World War, the high plateau was used as an observation post by partisans. Because of that, German forces destroyed it, which is why so little stands intact today.

Location and how to reach Kula Turnina

The tower stands between Rovinj and the village of Rovinjsko Selo, around 4 kilometres from the centre of town. You can get there on foot, by bike, or by car.

The walk up takes roughly 10 to 20 minutes, depending on where you start, along a well-kept track and path. If you are cycling, the route can be worked into the stretch of the Parenzana Trail further north.

Architecture and the prehistoric gradina remains at Kula Turnina

At Kula Turnina, you will find sturdy stone walls, remnants of the tower structure, and barrel vaults, the curved stone ceilings that show off the building’s early origins. These vaults are one of the clearest pieces of physical evidence that help date the construction.

Underneath and around the medieval stonework, you will find traces of the much older hillfort.

Panoramic views of Rovinj and the surrounding coast

The view is the reason most people come back, recommending the trip. From the top of Kula Turnina, you look out over Rovinj itself. There are views of the Church of St Euphemia, with the Rovinj archipelago scattered across the water beyond.

On a clear day, the panorama reaches further still, taking in the Brijuni islands and, in good conditions, Pula to the south.

Best conditions for the panoramic views

  • Early morning: Soft light, fewer people, and the clearest air for distant islands.
  • Late afternoon to sunset: Warm light on the stone and the sea turning gold.
  • After rain: Crisp visibility once the cloud lifts.
  • Avoid: Foggy or hazy days, when the view disappears entirely.

Tips for visiting Kula Turnina

This is a rugged site with no kiosk, no toilets, and no staff. The path is well maintained, but the ground around the ruins is uneven, and the cobbled streets you cross if walking from town can be hard going in the wrong shoes.

Your must-do checklist

  • Check the weather and go on a clear day for the full view
  • Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes for the climb and the uneven terrain
  • Bring water, as there is nowhere to buy anything on site
  • Use your phone’s map to find the turning, since signage is minimal
  • Pack a camera for the ruin-and-coastline panorama
  • Allow around 20 minutes to explore the full extent of the ruins
  • Time it for early morning or late afternoon light
  • Take any litter back down with you

Turnina is a great half-day trip combined with the coast. You could climb the hill in the morning, then head back down for lunch at one of the local restaurants serving Istrian truffles and fresh seafood.

If you have a few days in the region, it is the perfect fit with other Istrian highlights like the medieval village of Grožnjan inland.
