Croatia is renowned for its many and varied charms, and Porec, a stunning summer town on the western Istrian peninsula, is one of the country’s stand-out locations. With tons to offer groups with kids, couples looking for a romantic retreat, culture vultures or solo travellers, the incredible mix of great beaches, family fun, cultural gems and gastronomic delights means there really is something for everyone, plus excellent value for your holiday budget. Here are just a few ideas for things to do in Porec.
Porec has some stunning beaches that don’t get too crowded, even in high season. Delfin, Pical Beach and Zelena Laguna are some excellent examples, with good swimming conditions in their beautiful clear waters. There are plenty of water activities to try and beaches like Zelena have cafés, bars and restaurants close at hand when it’s time for refreshments. The water park Aquacolors which opened in 2015 is just outside Porec, and has loads to keep the little ones (and not so little ones) entertained for hours on end. One of the largest water parks in southeast Europe, it’s open from May to September and is a hit with locals and tourists alike.
There are a lot of things to do in Porec, and if you enjoy getting out there and seeing nature up close, there are a whole host of options to keep you happy. Why not check out along the Parenzana Trail? This old abandoned railway track, originally running between Trieste to Porec, was abandoned in the 1930’s but has now been lovingly restored for walkers and cyclists, with options to slip into the forests and nature trails that surround it. This is one of the best plans to do in Porec. Or for some subterranean fun, and something a little different from the norm, the Baredine Cave takes you 60 metres below the earth into a magical grotto world filled with stalagmites, stalactites and underground lakes. Perfect for getting out of the sun and firing up your imagination on a hot day.
Nobody leaves Croatia without raving about the quality of the food and drink there, and Porec has lots to get excited about, whether you’re dining on a budget or looking for something a bit special. With some great restaurants showcasing the local delights throughout the area, you’ll be spoilt for choice, such as the excellent seafront restaurant Hrast for seafood options, or Selo Mekisi for the best of Istrian cuisine. Istria is renowned for its wine and olive oil, and you can sample both of these at Agrolaguna, the area’s largest producer, where you can book a tour of the wine cellar and fill up on Porec’s finest! It’s right in town too, so no need to travel far (or drive back after a few of the local specialties!)
Not only is Porec rich in natural beauty, its old towns and historical landmarks are both fascinating and magnificent. Porec Old Town, on a little peninsula surrounded by the sea, is the beating heart of the place, and somewhere to while away the hours wandering around and taking it all in. With charming cobbled streets, pavement cafés and terraces to watch the world go by, family friendly eateries and incredible architecture, there are a lot of things to do in Porec this holiday heaven.
The awe-inspiring sixth century Byzantine Euphrasian Basilica can be found here, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most popular destination for visitors to Porec, who come to marvel at the stunning architecture. A real treat for history and culture lovers, the Basilica welcomes all faiths, and services are still held there on a daily basis.
To combine a passion for historical locations with food, there’s nowhere better than the Round Tower. Built in 1475, this beautiful old building is now used as a cosy restaurant, where you can indulge in Croatian dishes whilst taking in some stunning views of the city.
If you enjoy a spot of retail therapy with your holidays, Porec has you covered on Decumanus, a beautiful cobbled street packed with stunningly preserved historical buildings, transporting you straight back to the time of the Romans. As well as being a feast for the eyes, Decumanus is the place to go for gift shopping, to check out the fantastic independent boutiques and shops, or enjoy the atmosphere while sipping a coffee or something a little stronger.
